GUDVANGEN DEVELOPING COMPANY STARTS BILDING VIKING VILLAGE

On the area where traditional Viking market is held each summer, a permanent Viking Village is soon to be established. The construction work will start in August 2016, and phase one will be open for business already May 31st 2017

The concept of Viking Valley

The village will be called “NJARDARHEIMR” (which means “the home dedicated to the Norse God Njord”) The Viking Valley as a concept will be an historical, living and working Viking settlement, where the Viking age and their exciting history will be brought to life. Members of the public will be able to interact and step back into time to experience and engulf the Viking age for themselves.

Viking Valley will become an educational park dedicated to forging memories through learning and interacting with the inhabitants of the Viking village. All will be in accordance with archaeological evidence but still in a fun and entertaining way.

About the Viking Village

The Viking Village will consist of buildings which in total, will cover over 1100 square feet .

It will consume approximately 18000 cubic feet of timber.

The carvings and decorations on the structures will be based on traditional Viking styles eg: Borre, Urnes, Jelling, and Oseberg.

The houses will be built with previous experience in reconstructing Viking era buildings as reference.

The ironworks eg: hinges for the doors and locks will be made by a blacksmith with life long experience from that kind of historical work.

We will use traditional authentic paint such as based on oxblood for the embellishments.

We will utilise material found in the fjord district and use peat and wood for shingle, like that used in the stave churches.

It’s our ambition to build a Viking settlement of high quality for both learning and enjoyment.
